Darron A. Bacal, MD, MBA

Dr. Bacal joined Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C. in July of 1997 as the group's Pediatric Ophthalmologist. In 1999 he was appointed a Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology in the Yale-New Haven School of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. In 2006 he was promoted to Assistant Clinical Professor in the same department. He is a Board Certified member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1997 and a Fellow of the Academy since 1998.

He is also a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. In 1997, Dr. Bacal completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania.

After earning a Bachelor of Science from the Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Bacal received his medical degree in 1992 from Jefferson Medical College of the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Following a medical internship in New York, Dr. Bacal completed his Ophthalmology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He was selected Chief Resident of Ophthalmology, and served in this capacity from 1994-1995. During his Chief Residency, Dr. Bacal traveled to Guyana (South America) to participate in a volunteer project designed to provide Ophthalmic surgical care for the indigent population of the country.

Dr. Bacal is on the active medical staff of Yale-New Haven Hospital, the Hospital of St. Raphael, Milford Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital of West Haven. Dr. Bacal is the 2016-2017 Chairman of the Professional Education Committee for the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology & Strabismus. He has numerous publications in both textbooks and journals. Dr. Bacal has presented original research at national Ophthalmic meetings. In 1995, he was selected the Bill Gore Outstanding Researcher by the Society of Vascular Technology for his study of blood flow within the optic nerve. He presented his findings at the society's annual meeting in Chicago. Dr. Bacal is a manuscript reviewer for Ophthalmology, the official journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of PEDIG (Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group).

Dr. Bacal a member of the Professional Education Committee for Prevent Blindness Connecticut. He resides in Orange, Connecticut with his wife and their two children and enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and racquetball. Dr. Bacal is a PEDIG investigator. PEDIG, the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, is a national research organization involved in Pediatric Ophthalmology clinical trials and has approximately 50 medical investigators. Dr. Bacal is participating in all of the current studies. Presently all current studies involve amblyopia treatments.
